Connecticut: Demonstration Sites and Silviculture Research

At the University of Connecticut (UConn), efforts have focused on professional outreach, demonstration sites, and research to support white oak regeneration. Collaborating with partners such as the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and NRCS, UConn has incorporated white oak management strategies into its Master Woodland Manager Program. Informational materials developed through this project have been distributed at multiple state and regional conferences.

One of the key accomplishments in Connecticut has been the establishment of silvicultural research sites, where landowners and forestry professionals can observe regeneration treatment alternatives in practice. The focus on climate-adaptive silviculture has been well-received, with workshops and field trips reinforcing the importance of oak conservation. UConn has also integrated white oak into an educational project with local high schools, providing students with lumber for woodworking projects, further fostering an appreciation for sustainable forestry.
